Longer School Day/Longer School Year
Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, we all know, has longer school days and a longer school year than Memphis City Schools. Yet, Memphis City Schools just recently proposed extending the school day for middle school and high school students by forty-five minutes and extending the school year by eleven days. (Elementary students will attend school on Saturday's instead of having the extra forty-five minutes and will have the extra eleven days, as well.) Memphis City School's belief is this extra time for instruction will increase learning and bring up test scores. What do you believe? Do longer days and longer school years increase learning? Why? What are the pros and cons?

I do agree, because Memphis students needs to be educated more. Some kids need those extra days of school to catch up with other kids that passed them in learning. Elementary school children needs to learn more as well. Their minds are being polluted by the negativity in the outside world. Instead, they need to focus on school work.
ReplyDeletei believe it will yet we,of memphis academy of science and engineering,do not need a longer school day or year. we already have that . i believe that if we do have an extended school day/and or year the dropout rates among students will decrease drastically. Also, what happened to summer vacation.Just as adults need time to wind down and have a break, kids do too
ReplyDeleteno i do not believe longer school hours is going to help. Sudents will jus become bored and tired of extra work. The teachers need to do as much as they can in the time we have in a classroom. Now, im not sayin that the eleven extra days is not good. Memphis city school should use that idea. Its just in the classroom is were you should not add on time
ReplyDeleteI disagree, because some high school students might have jobs that are in the next 45 minutes. They woould miss work, or constantly be late going to work. What if no one cant check them out early in order for them to get to work on time.
ReplyDeletei disagree with you @kentitsu. kids need time to themselves or else you more dangers could occur like more stress related illness. and what you said about kids need that extra time to catch, ugh, what do you think summer school is for.. there is no right or wrong answer in your belief yet i disagree wholeheartedly with your thesis being that i find some faults that need mending.
ReplyDeleteI think that is fair to all schools because we yget out late. and other schools get out early then us. which memphis city school needs to stay in longer why because. they have a lack of education or some thing so i say yes, let them go all year just like a charter school.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Tizzy Baby. The drop out rate will increase rapidly, due to the students that are not willing to learn. They will become tired of school and the students are gonna drop out like flies.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we are not obligated to follow Memphis City Schools simply because we have got longer hours and longer days already, but to other schools I believe that it would be a great additive. Other schools need longer hours, just like us,to lessen trouble, to promote extra curricular activities and learning, and to make Tennessee one of the more smarter states. Tennessee also have changed their criteria, you used to could graduate with 16-20 credits, now you have to get 22, which can be more reachable with longer days, allowing another period to go in the day is a commendable add on for MCS.
ReplyDeleteLonger school hours are needed but not days. Students will have the same mind set even if you extend the days. Lazy, selfish, dont care, sleep kind of attitude. What we need to do is improve the community. Kids do these things because they see other do it and want to be on the cool bandwagon. If we can show them how much the education means then they will want to work harder. IT is all about the effort. If you show every student the salery difference between a high school diploma and a college degree then im sure majority will work harder.
ReplyDeleteI think that this should not take place at all. Of course they're are a couple benefits like test scores will be improved. on the other side look at how much class time that really is. 45 divided into 6 is only 7.5 minutes more a class. If the 11 days are tacked on it wouldn't matter because the days will be added onto the end of the year and that is after the state testing will take place so it'll be students in class doing nothing for 11 days. the entire plan makes no sense to me.
ReplyDeleteNo i dont believe that longer school hours will increase acadimic scores because were here till 4 o'clock in half of us is still failing. If they do deside to prolong school hours they need to put fourth a study hall seccion where students who need help in other subjects can get it.
ReplyDeleteI agree, because Memphis City Schools need to stay in school a little late because some students have to catch up and work harder thatn other plus charter schools teach differnt from memphis city school too so thats why i agree with it!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI do not feel that the increase in time and days will help the students learn more. Here at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering we stay in school until 4:00, therefore; i don't think these requirements should pertain to us. The things that the school board are trying to enforce for Memphis Schools are already taking place in charter schools. If I had any say so I would cut back the time for charter schools, and make MCS stay longer. The more time one makes a child stay in school the more they're not going too want to attend. As for them trying to make elementary students have school on Saturday is very unnecessary, because they're only learning things to better their brain. The classes that K-6 take are not required to graduate. I just do NOT agree with the changes Mr.Cash are trying to make.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should sortn the schools days because kids need a life outside of school.I kids wantd an education they stay there to learn.Every student has the ability to learn it,you can either do it or fail.Stayin in school longer aint gne help u pass if u dnt try.I think that it should stay the same because everybody gets busy. With longer hours and school days it gne make kids nt wnt to go to school at all they will skip school.I think they should come up with a betta way for kids to learn then to stay longer
ReplyDeleteFrom abc 24 news:
ReplyDeleteMEMPHIS, TN – A longer school day for some students, a longer school year for others – that could be the future for Memphis City Schools. Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash is pushing for the changes, and Monday night briefed the school board on his four-year academic plan. He says the changes will make students more competitive, but acknowledged there are still lots of questions.
He said the extra time will allow students to focus on reading, science and math. Also under this plan, students could graduate in less than four years.
abc News 24
I agree with Morgan. Some students to need longer school days so they can make up work. A student might have a big family problem and they miss school for a week or to. They dont have the time when they come back to make up all that work. I think the extra hour should be used on make up work. The eleven extra days should be optional. If you go then a student that is about to fail could pass by takin a test and a few easy worksheets.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that schools should have a longer day but not a longer school year. Having a longer year and day might increase learning and bring test scores up.Because it give kids more time to focus on a subject to get a better under standing. But i dont think its necessary for them to go a extra day of the week. Because they might mis out on something that is important for there social life in th future.Such as communication skills.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kentitsu to a certain extent, the hours do need to be longer, but no more school days should be added, then this worsens the economics of Memphis. Sales skyrocket during summer so if the students can't go and spend money this messes up money for such things as local business that capitalize in summer and nothing else. If there are no people put there to spend money no money will be made, and think about the teachers, their break is shortening every year.
ReplyDeleteI agree with shaniqwa because even tho we in school longer that dnt mean student will try.due to the new generation make kids will try to drop out or just skip school
ReplyDelete@miciara aka Tiszy Babee...You are right, I do agree with you on that one, but sometimes Summer isn't as fulfilling as it ought to be. No one can wait all the way to Summer to let off their anger anyway. Im not going to say "put a sock in it teacher's pet!" but argue this point and a visual and intellectual way. I believe that children are expected to do too much. So we have parents here and there that don't really care if their child gets an A and would perfectly fine with a C. Children who grow out of their smartness and feel that a C is okay, well it is, just okay. Average doesn't get you into the college of your choice, average doesn't get you the dream house, the dream car, the dream job that you wanted to bad. You have to strive, but if children are lessened by their parents then that child who has so much potential can get intervined with a child who lacks such potential and doesn't have a care in the world, smoking pot to release stress. And so does that child with potential, and losses it not hanging around with the wrong crowd, but hanging around those who adopted him/her causing them to adapt to the opposer. Children that loose their jobs will eventually become discouraged, and smoke their way through high school. More of the reason to not add on days, shortening our break, and not add on longer days causing a chain of consequences and effects which are far beyond our control.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Shaniqwa because there are many students who attend school, and still do not know half of things they should. Longer school days just makes a child less interested and less focused.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree because kids need fun and all they doing is taking that away.Yes they should be educated but who would want to stay in school all day.Teachers students and parents take off there time.Teachers might have kids thyey get off before us then they would probaly have to bring them to school, and that would be a distaction. You have to think aboutv the parents with a job they have to cut back hours and take longer ships. But its also about sacrifices.
ReplyDeletei disagree with longer school days and hours. If they are not learning anything now or doing their work, what makes you think their perspective on getting their education will change? Teachers should mold our minds and make learning more interesting, then maybe scores will reach a higher level!Longer school hours and days is just a longer time for boredom, being disruptive, and laziness! I think we should have a option. The students who actually want too learn more should be able too stay longer.
ReplyDeletei agree with momo.some students do need a longer time to catch up with other.and some students do not catch on to some subjects like others do.
ReplyDeletei dont think that extending of school hours will help students learn more. the way a students learn is by wanting too learn and if the student doesnt want to learn and is forced to stay in school longer they will not learn. we go to school longer than memphis city schools and sometimes i feel like its a waist of time because we take the same amout of classes that memphis city schools take and we learn the same things. then when dealing with the extending of the days we stay in school the majority of students probally want come and if they do come they will be lazy and want do any work. this is because they are use to getting out of school after a certain amount of days. these changes they are trying to make are changes that they should have made long before now and not at the last min.
ReplyDeletei agree with kentitsu because memphis city schools need to stay in schools longer so some can catch up with others
ReplyDeletewhat i got from the news page is that Mr.cash is trying to higher our knowledge and get us to were some can graduate early and others just get a better understanding in their work. But i dont think we need to add more hours on to what we have now. We need after school things that like if we go we can earn maybe like a half a credit of some sort. Give us a push in the right direction. (abc24)
ReplyDeletea good thing about letting memphis city schools stay in class longer is they might get more things done in the classroom. That is for only the ones that want to learn. Not everybody want to learn and then some people learn at different paste. They might be able to pick up what they missed around the end of class instead of the time period they gave them at first in a classroom
ReplyDeleteit is nt a dne deal prior to dr cash the superintendent on abc 24.
ReplyDeleteat www.abc24.com
I personally say that its not a good idea that memphis city school go longr days and year because of the simple fact that too much knowledge can cause a child to not want to learn anymore...im not saying there is a such thing as too much knowledge because it not..im saying too much pressure on a child to keep up with grades and classwork..so it not a good idea. that's what i think.
ReplyDeleteI agree with mike mike staying in school longer does cause a student to want to drop out instead of trying to catch up.
ReplyDeleteI Perfectly Undeestand Where He's Coming From But We Are Still Kids And We Deserve Free Time From School During Summer , So I STRONGLY Disagree , Memphis City School Hours Are From 7:15 Til 2:15 Isn't That Enough ? Surely Them As Children Gets Tired Of Going To School But Don't Some Of Us Goes Anyway ? Education Is VERY Important To Me But What Happen To The Fun Times We Use To Have In School ? High School Is Something You Should fLASHBACK On And Say "Hey I Remember My Years In High School And I Had A Ballllll" But If We Have Longer Hours &&'d Longer Days We Might As Well Go Season Round !
ReplyDeleteI believe that school days should be longer but if you add days to the school year thats probaly not going to be afffective as you it to be.I say this because student attendace is probaly going to be low. Also making the school year longer is going to take away from the teachers and the students vaccation. So overall I think making the school year longer should not be put into effect.
ReplyDeletei agree with destinee because Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering and other charter schools stay longer than Memphis City Schools. They should extend the timing for them and longer hours. That way if children have to catch up on anything they could. Also teachers have to make learning fun and interesting because kids will no longer pay attention. Maybe test scores will rise and we won't hva eto go through this problem. We are already staying till 4:00. That's long enough for me. If they kids stay in more they would'nt be excited to go because of the long hours. I do think it increases learning, but you have to make it fun. It really would help the students to bring test scores up. more college students.
ReplyDeleteI agree with julian because having extra school days can make you miss out on important things dealing with your social life.
ReplyDelete@Shaniqwa : I Totally Agree Because Advisory For Us Should Be For Studying Or Getting Unfinish Work Or Homework For That Night Done ! Half Of Us Are Failing Advisory Because Of The Things Teachers Are Giving Us And Once Again It Is Very Joyful To Learn And Feel As If You're Gaining Knowledge Its A WONDERFUL Feeling But WE ARE STILL CHILDREN Trying To Be A Child Because We Don't Have Long Before We Come In The Real World But We Have Enough Pressure Already As A Teenager So Why Put More Pressure On Us Then We Already Need =(
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with the plan at all.I disagree because, why force regular schools to extend their hours/days, when they can go to a charter our more advanced school if the child and the parent choose to. Its already sad enough that the drop out rate and truancy rate is off the charts. I say that because, most of us students here at M.A.S.E. are complaining now how we're stuck in school all day and tryin hard to maintain our grades with A's and B's. To me if the plan is put to work the drop out rate and truancy rate would increase VERY much!! I believe they should have a lot more thought put into this idea.

ReplyDeleteI feel that MCS students should not have to go to school an extra 45 minutes. That extra time should be for tutoring. The schooled board is coddling those students. Its up to those students to get their work done. Why should other students suffer because of someonelse's ignorance. In college its not going to be this way. They dont care about them coming longer hours, as long as they get those checks their fine. I dont understand why we need the extra 11 days. Adults are only looking from their point of view. I really believe that if we get extra time then kids are going to be skipping ,leaving early, or not coming at all! Students need to just get their priorites in order.
ReplyDeleteElementary
ReplyDeleteThe only reason that I feel that he has proposed this is to look good to state officials so i feel that he is doing this for all the wrong reasons. I am against this because throughout history(for elementary schools) who look doesnt look foward to saturday. A day to sleep in.It isnt like parents dont have to get up in the mornings to take their kids to school.for five out of seven days of hard working days isnt enough for students. what about the working class families that work weekdays how do you think working people that work government offices would feel if they have to work on saturdays. Kids need a break to.
Highschools
Credits, jobs ,about to enter the real world why add on to whats already killing a young adult. this would just be tutore. this is one of the main reasons that I hate being at mase.
I totally disagree with extra days add to the end of the year. even though it is true that many of us are behind on a lot of our work ect but yet not all students are interesting on pulling their grades up. Im okay with the extra hours because sometimes we dont get a chance to finish with school work so, we can use that time to finish. But still we already get out at 4:00pm and many students are failling and why? because they just dont care so what's the point of adding more days at the end of the year for some students who wont appreciate that time. you can try many ways to make them improve grades but everything depends on the student if he/she dont want to do it it wont work at all...
ReplyDeleteI strongly disagree the proposal given by Memphis City School(MCS). If students scores are already low and they attend on a regularly. Its not the school hours thats making their scores low. Its maybe something with the child. Then therefore, they should be trying to get the child individual help. Making the schools years and day longer wont do anything but raise taxes and make scores even lower. If the school year and days are made longer MCS WILL lose a lot of students. The students will lose even more interest in school and not even show up for school. Then we wont only have low test scores but a skyrocketing drop out rate and/or low attendance . Then maybe the students do want to learn. Maybe school isn't for them. The ONLY solution to fixing the low test scores it to give the students tutoring! Its the only sensible solution.
ReplyDeleteI think that adding extra days will not increase learning. It will only makes kids more distraction. Kids can only do what they want to do. Long days will make kids lazy. They would get in even more trouble much because they're at school longer. You can only make a child do so much. AS long as you push them as much as possible they will do it. The younger kids will not enjoy this. They will be upset seeing themselves at school on Saturdays wondering why their older sibling is not their Some parents won't have transportation to get they're child to school on Saturdays. Some parents are only able to pick their child up at a certain time an extending it will cause problems for them. Which will cause more problems for kids and start more violence that we don't need. The longer hours still want change the students grades if they failing when they get out early they want pass when the days get longer because their going to get frustrated of doing all the work.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mike Mike staying in school longer would make a child want to do better. It will make us become bored with school and lose a lot of interest in school.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Desha. I think that she is right that kids can have everything handed to them and still fail even though they go to school longer hours and extra days.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Kriner Cash's decsion to add extra days to Memphis City schools and Elementray schools. It wouldn't make much of a difference if you add extra time or not because students will get in more problems by seeing the other students for a long period of time. I understand that he thinks that will change but you can push a person but they can still fail if you give them everything they need to pass. Younger kids might have issues getting to school because of transporttation or other they're parents might just be to lazy to get up.But, Us as Memphians should appericate what cash is plowing ( reforming his belief)that this woud help MCS to improve eventhough we isn't clear on how this would work out . !
ReplyDeleteMaking school hours longer is not going to help our grades at all. If MCS think our grades are low now what makes them think that they are going to be any better by making school longer. We will be exhausted and struggling to even try to stay awake than trying to learn.
ReplyDelete@angie samuels: i strongly agree with you about thee extra time and days!! Like the old saying: CLOSED MOUTHS DONT GET FED!! Right?? If there are students(children & or parents) that want to catch up, make up, and or do notes for tutoring they can sign up for it. Dont you think they'll speak up and do it. Why force, when you can be given a choice.
ReplyDeletei dont agree with haveing longer school day and or year will not help. I believe if they make school day and or year will increase drop out rate more. Increasing school hours will not help some students chooses not to do the work the teacher gives them. I go to Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering and we have a longer school then the City of Memphis schools and there still student failing classes so what the point of longer school day and or yaers.
ReplyDeleteI believe that MCS should increase class time for their students. Only because The United States is a low ranking country in education. Longer days and school years aren't very necessary. Due to some kids will get tired and retaliate by not doing the school work or listening to the teacher.
ReplyDeletePros:Better grades, Higher test scores.
Cons:Uprising may occur, Schedules getting disorganized, and Fatigue(for elementary)
I feel that we shouldn't have longer school days. The reason that kids barely pay any attention in school now is because they are bored. You cant expect a child to sit at school for 9 hours a day and not get bored. I have heard many adults say that children attention span are low, if that is the case, making them stay in school 10 hours will make it worst. I also feel that making little kids go to school 6 days a week is to much. You're trying to make them do more work and less fun. They're children for god sake, let them enjoy their childhood like you did. My quote for this is 'Think before you speak. What if you were in OUR shoes'
ReplyDelete.RoLynda Kaye:)
I believe that ten months of school is long enough. There's no reason to add on extra days. At the end of the school year everyone would want to relax.
ReplyDelete` I disagree with having longer school hours. I mean , its not like our scores will rise just because of longer hours. Everyone isn't going to take the inishative to put forth an effort to better the scores. .
ReplyDeleteI would have to hugely disagree with longer school year and hours. Charter schools already have a advantage with the longer school days anyway. From 8 a.m to 4 p.m is long enough. I understand that some students need more help than others, but they should still try there best and attempt to understand what is being taught to them; In the matter of time its being taught!
ReplyDeleteIts around that time we everyone want to have fun, not stay at school all day to do work. But I think we should apply ourselves more not add more days.
ReplyDeleteI feel as though this will be a good opportunity for children who are failing or have learning disabilities. Children should want this for their selves in order to be the best they can be. They don't understand that this is for their own good. Most of them see it as a punishment. They're very ungrateful. I feel as though If they increase school days they should supply a better lunch and an afternoon snack because children get very exhausted as the hours go by. Longer school hours do increase learning but the teachers should have creative ways to teach children other than lecturing. They should have hands on activities. The pro of this idea is more teaching but the con is getting the kids to learn. What is the kids aren't willing to learn. Then what ? What is parents don't bring their little ones to Saturday school ? The school board should have very positive and good points to this change .
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that making students get out of school at a later time, will help a bit because if they haven't done it now why start now all of a sudden? I also don't think this wll be effective with MCS because ,not saying all ,but most aren't even trying to apply their selves in regular school hours so why extend longer days when alot of kids will drop out anyway ,and the drop out rate would sky rocket ..then who do they have to blame ?
ReplyDelete- I Don't Agree With This Plan Simply Because He Think It Will Improve People Grades To Me It Want ...Kids Are Already Complaining About The Time They Get Out Of School And They Get Out At 2:15 And 3:15 So Why Would You Suggest The Hours Be Longer . The Drop Out Rate Would Be Even Higher !! If It's That Serious ut The Students That Are Failing In Programs To Get Them Extra Credict That Would Help Them Alot !
ReplyDeleteI agree because some students do need a longer time to catch up with certain work that they missed or didn't have enough time to learn it.I also disagree because changing the hours of school will force a strain on some parents because of the transportation of their child.
ReplyDelete- Ladarian Thomas :)
ReplyDeleteIf they decide to go through with this rediculious plan, MASE shouldn't have to get longer days or hours. We're always tired at the end of the day so why make it worse?
ReplyDelete@Darius Stafford
ReplyDeleteWell actually you will learn more from extra hours. You might not enjoy it, but a lot can get accomplished in more time.
Its not about the hours and days its about how much you put in to your learning. If people take their education seriously it wouldnt be no problem with the time.Adding more time teachers would have to put their life on hold just to teach some children who dont care and i feel thats not rite!!!!
ReplyDeleteI disagree. I think school should days and hours should not be extended. It would only make kids hate the school. They would get bored and not want to come to school. Memphis City Schools should only extend school for those who are failing until their grades come up.
ReplyDeletei believe that extending school days and hours would be a bad and a good thing. it would be a bad thing because most students are already dropping out enough as it is. some are just here to do nothing but fail. so why would you extend the school hours so more and more kids can drop out or fail.but it can also be a good thing because we could get more learning time in, and also it can keep us focused on the important things in life. longer days and longer hours in shcool could be a goog or bad thing depends on how you look at. but even if they extend the hours and days most students will rarely come to school or they will just fail test that are given to them.so i would agree to disagree................
ReplyDelete- I Agree With You Aaliyah Because School IS LONG ENOUGH ! Why Make Go Even Longer Ther's No Point !!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI really disagree....Because during the summer students get jobs and i also may have children they have to take care of. I feel this might need to be excused because even if they may extend the days many student may not consider these days very important. As to saying their not going to show up at school during these extra days.If i was the Incharge i would reconsider this decision.Because some student here at MASE are still failing to pass. And our Hours & days are longer, so what does that tell you extending days and hours WHAT WILL THEY DO ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL.? Isnt that School for people who are stuggling to pass.Maybe there choice isnt so important because student arent goin to learn if you are trying to force them with extra hours & days.Children have to learn for themselves,But i do understand ACT & GATWAY score are very low thats why students must try harder...
ReplyDelete@leevarius-I agree with you because rather or the school hours are long or short the students still have the power to wanna make the good grades or not. even if this did happen the grades might be the same.
ReplyDelete-I Agree With You Aaliyah
ReplyDeleteI think it would not be a smart idea to just now extend the school hours and year. It, first of all, is just out of the blue to do such a sudden move at the END OF YEAR. Even if you make school longer, You will just give people more time to cut up. What about disciplinary problems, and getting the community in shape. To me it just seems like their making changes without thinking. Personally I think we need a study hall period, but we got Advisory. It just seems like a class to cram more work on us now. Why is it so hard to make a period and call it study session, So we can um, STUDY. Instead of fixing problems like this, we are making trying to implement a plan that is too late to be implemented or, put in place. >:(
ReplyDeleteBy Chance
i agree with you @aaliyah lucas people want to have some months to relax n have some free time.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that its good to add on extra days nor hours to memphis city schools, not mase anyway. The reason why is because some kids already dont come to school because they feel that their education is not important an they dont feel the need to graduate, and if you tell them that they have to stay longer you will see more student drop outs than before. Another way to get students to learn more is by helping them with class work an make sure that they understand what is suppose to be done an how ,and have more tutouring after school. That way maybe the school system would change their mind about adding on hours an days.
ReplyDeleteI agree with uniqueness in a way. Only I feel that if we aren't pushing ourselves, not that the facility needs to push us.But they should help find ourselves. Basically provide more activities to get engaged
ReplyDelete
